The theme of the artist is quite popular in Japanese tickling material. Here we have a drawing of a man in the act of drawing pictures of a bound woman, certainly suggesting a self portrait. The artist in the picture appears to have lost his self control, and his lust for causing the woman to suffer is manifested by means of the tools of his trade. Japanese censorship, and perhaps a dose of propriety, results in a bit of mystery over just what exactly is happening. Mystery can be entertaining, but when viewed within the larger context of the customary Japanese depiction of bondage tickling it should be clear that the artist is teasing his model's crotch with his paintbrush.
Do you suppose that's the reason for Mona Lisa's grin?
